UK-based engineering services group Babcock is to close down its shipbuilding operation in Appledore, southwest England, after failing to secure new work for the yard.

Announcing the move on 1 November, the company said it would end its site lease on the Appledore facility in March next year. All 199 of the yard's employees have been offered relocation to other Babcock facilities; 140 are already on short-term redeployment to the company's Devonport operations.

Located on the River Torridge in north Devon, the Appledore shipyard has built over 200 commercial and naval ships including the UK Royal Navy (RN) ocean survey ship HMS Scott , the RN hydrographic survey vessels HMS Echo and HMS Enterprise , and two classes of offshore patrol vessel (OPV) for the Irish Naval Service.
