Australian shipbuilder Austal has "detected and responded" to a breach of its data management systems, the company has announced.

Austal said on 1 November that the breach, which was made by an "unknown offender", involved "some staff email addresses and mobile phone numbers". A small number of stakeholders who were potentially directly affected have been informed, it added.

"Following the breach, the offender purported to offer certain materials for sale on the internet and engage in extortion," said Austal. "The company has not and will not respond to the extortion attempts."

Austal said the data breach has had no effect on Austal's ongoing operations.
