Australian naval shipbuilder ASC has signed an agreement with French submarine motor manufacturer Jeumont Electric with a view to collaborating on programmes for the Royal Australian Navy (RAN).

ASC said in a press release on 7 November that the two companies will explore opportunities for co-operation on the sustainment of the RAN's six Collins-class submarines and in designing, building, and testing motors for the RAN's Sea 1000 programme to procure 12 next-generation submarines.

Jeumont Electric is a supplier of main motors for the Collins-class submarines and in July 2016 was named as the preferred supplier of permanent magnet motors for the Sea 1000 programme, for which French shipbuilder Naval Group is the lead designer.
